Arson is a particularly destructive crime. It impacts on both the individual victim and on society as a whole. It is the largest single cause of major fires in the UK and at its worst, leads to loss of life and significant financial damage.
The number of arson attacks on schools has increased steadily over the years. It is now the largest single cause of fires in schools, with 60% of all school fires classified as deliberate. There are over 1,000 arson attacks on schools each year.
Recent estimates put the average cost of school fires at around £50,000. This includes the general economic cost of fire, including the costs of meeting building and fire regulations (which are in anticipation of, rather than a consequence of, fire). Therefore, arson is costly before an attack even occurs.
