Pre-sentence report
This is asked for by the judge or magistrates, to help them decide on the most suitable way of dealing with anyone convicted of an offence.

Probation Service
Supervises offenders on community sentences and those let out of prison before the end of their sentences. It helps offenders to stop committing crimes, helps them with education, getting jobs and overcoming drug and alcohol problems. It protects the public by keeping a close eye on offenders in the community.

Prosecute
To bring somebody to court for committing a crime.

Punishment
A penalty given to the offender, confirming that what they have done is wrong.
