High Court

This is the senior civil court in England and Wales. Civil cases not dealt with in county courts are handled in the High Court, either at the Royal Courts of Justice in London or at High Court centres in England and Wales.

It has three divisions or sections, which deal with different types of cases:

  • Queen's Bench Division: deals with disputes over contracts or land, non- payments of debts, and damages (in respect of personal injury; negligence; breach of contract; and libel and slander)..
  • Chancery Division: deals with complicated matters like disputes about wills, land laws and business laws, among others.
  • Family Division: deals with family issues such as domestic violence, divorce and child welfare. Divorce is usually dealt with through county courts, but the High Court deals with some divorce cases that involve very wealthy husbands and wives.
