The Children Act (1989) ensures that children's welfare is always considered when parents separate or divorce. Their best interests are kept in mind.
These are the rights given to a child:
You have the right to see a children and family reporter, who will listen when you tell them what you want to happen and will let the court know about your wishes and feelings.
You have the right to say if you want to visit the court or meet the judge or magistrate. Some children want to do this and some children don't. You can talk to the children and family reporter about what you want to do.
You have the right to know what has been written about you.
You have the right to be told what is happening by the children and family reporter.
You have the right to know the decision made about you by the judge or magistrate.
