The process for arrest and charging
7–11s:
Sandy, Micky and Spike at the police station (Unit 4)
11–16s:
Manish and Ryan at the police station (Unit 3)
PC Lawler's report (Unit 3)

The police can arrest someone (take them to the police station and question them if necessary) if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that the person has committed a crime.

If you are arrested, you have the right to:

  • Be treated humanely and with respect.
  • Be told why you have been arrested.
  • Make a phone call.
  • Speak to a solicitor alone.

It is also important to note that:

  • Your parent/carer must be notified (if you're under 18).
  • You can only be held in a police station for a maximum of 24 hours (36 for a serious offence) before you must either be charged with an offence or released. The most important thing is to stay calm - even if you think you shouldn't have been arrested. Shouting and screaming won't help matters.
