The English and Welsh legal system is divided into two parts: the part that deals with criminal offences and the part that deals with civil disputes. Different courts and tribunals deal with different types of offences and disputes, although sometimes there is an overlap. Civil law in this resource also includes family law.

NB Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under a different legal system from England and Wales. Although much of this resource will be useful for Citizenship education in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the law it is based on will be different.
