Criminal offences
7–11s:
Smash and run (Unit 2)
On the line (Unit 2)
Fire! (Unit 2)
11–16s:
Smash and grab! (Unit 2)
Twocking (Unit 2)

These are offences against the whole community, rather than a person or company. The person who is accused of the wrongdoing is prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS - who work on behalf of the state) rather than another individual. Shoplifting, murder and vandalism are all criminal offences. If people are found guilty of committing a crime, they are punished. For example, they might be sent to prison. Victims of criminal offences do not get compensated by the court but they can apply for compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. Weapons 11-16s: Smash and grab! (Unit 2)

If you are 17 or under and carry a knife in school or a public place, you could receive a detention and training order (DTO) for 24 months. The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is four years in prison and a fine of £5,000.

Swiss Army knives are legal - provided that the blade is shorter than 7.5cm. However, you cannot buy any sort of knife (even a penknife) if you are under the age of 18.

You have to be 18 or over to purchase or hire an air weapon. You have to be 17 or over to purchase or hire any other type of fire arm. A firearm certificate or shotgun certificate issued by the local police is required.
