In 2006, 69 people were killed in Britain on railway lines because they were trespassing. This means that they were on or near the tracks without permission.

47% of those killed were young adults or children. (Source: Rail Safety and Standards Board Annual Safety Performance Report 2006)

Other crimes as well as trespassing are committed on the railways - many of them by young people. In 2006 there were:

  • 3,319 acts of vandalism.
  • 2,606 missiles thrown or fired (e.g. stone throwing).
  • 2,606 obstructions on the line (e.g. placing items on the line).
  • 229 acts of arson.
