This activity invites students to think about the rights of the consumer when buying goods from a shop. Students complete a quiz to try to separate fact from opinion.
Discussion
Do any of the students have experience of taking a faulty item back to a shop? What happened? Do they think they were treated fairly and respectfully? Would they have been treated in the same way if they had been adults, for example?
Role play In pairs, invite the students to act out a conversation between a customer returning a faulty item to a shop and the shop assistant or shop owner. The customer should be as assertive as possible without getting angry, and the shop assistant/shop owner should stand their ground for as long as possible. Each should back up their arguments.
Extension activities Ask the students to research what rights consumers have when buying items in shops and to write a 'Know your rights' fact sheet based on their findings. Do consumers have the same rights when buying online?
