This activity is about the right to a minimum wage. Students fill in whether they think it would be fair for Shoma to leave her job and the advice they would give her.

Discussion
Talk about wages. Do any of the students have paper rounds or Saturday jobs? Do they think they are paid a fair wage? Why do they think we have a National Minimum Wage, and who is entitled to it? (Everyone who is employed, resident in the UK and above the age of 16 is entitled to the minimum amount per hour. There are different rates for adults and young people.) Refer also to the case study Employment - Sara Jane.

Role play
Ask the students to get into small groups of three, and ask them to act out a conversation between Shoma and her boss, and Teresa and her boss. Shoma is asking for the minimum wage and Teresa is pointing out that she is paid more than Shoma for the same work. What will the boss say to each woman?

Extension activities
Challenge the students to find out what Shoma could legally do if her boss still refuses to give her the minimum wage, and write an advice sheet for her. Will she risk losing her job if she keeps insisting on more money?
