View activity In this activity, students find out about sentencing. They match up the words reparation, rehabilitation, punishment, protection of the public, and prevention of re-offending with the correct definitions. DiscussionTalk about the five reasons for a judge passing a particular sentence (reparation, rehabilitation, punishment, protection of the public, and prevention of re-offending). Ask the students to get into pairs and discuss what they think is meant by each of the five terms. Which of the five do they think is most important for Ryan and for Manish, and why? You will find the glossary useful for this discussion.
Extension activitiesInvite the students to work in pairs to create their own 'Reparation rap' to explain what reparation is and how it works. Reparation helps offenders to understand the effects of crime on the victim and to make amends, e.g. by paying compensation or writing a letter of apology.
