View activityDiscussionThis activity encourages the students to think about the possible conflicts which might arise when people from many different backgrounds, beliefs and cultures live together in one community. They need to think about other possible incidents in Crownford Rise involving the law, e.g. drugs, under- age drinking, and personal safety.
Ask the students if there have been any problems or arguments in their own street recently, or if they have seen anything relevant in the news. What kind of problems were they? Why do they think problems arose? Have the conflicts been resolved - if so, how? Can the students offer suggestions about how a conflict in the community could be resolved without recourse to the law? The case study Mediation - Jake and Gus is a useful place to begin.

 Role play
Challenge the students to work in pairs and to imagine another kind of conflict that might occur in Crownford Rise e.g. loud music annoying a neighbour, two people arguing over a parking space, or a boy breaking the glass of an old man's greenhouse. Ask them to act out a scene with their two imaginary characters, focusing on the feelings of each of the characters in the scenes and the exact nature of the conflict.

 Extension activities
Refer back to the work done in the role play. Who do the students think was in the wrong in their role play, and why? Ask the students to write a short newspaper report about their imaginary incident, including a headline and quotations from each character about what happened and how they felt about it.
