View activity In this activity, the students re-read the facts about what happened at Avni's Stores and decide what the verdict will be in Ryan's case - which is being heard at the youth court. They must give reasons for their verdict. Discussion Introduce the idea of the youth court as a place that hears the cases of young people between the ages of 10 and 18 who have been charged with criminal offences. Ask the students why they think we have youth courts. Why shouldn't youth cases be heard in an adults' court? Do the students think the youth court is the right place to deal with Ryan's case?
Role play Extension activitiesAsk the students to work in pairs and to take it in turns to play the role of Ryan and the magistrate, acting out the courtroom scene. They should think carefully about what questions the magistrate would ask and the answers Ryan might give.
Challenge the students to make up a case which might be heard in a youth court and present it as a police case file. Examples might include a boy charged with assault, a girl charged with shoplifting and a teenager charged with anti-social behaviour.
