This activity introduces students to the idea of restorative justice. They find out what happened when Ryan met Mrs Sharma to hear how she felt on the day of the incident at her shop.

Discussion
Explain that restorative justice is a way of allowing the victim and the offender to communicate about an offence by talking. Do the students think this is a good idea, and why? Do they think it will work for Ryan?

Role play
Ask the students to get into small groups of three and take it in turns to act out the roles of Ryan, Mrs Sharma and the barrister/police officer. They should focus on the feelings of both Ryan and Mrs Sharma, being absolutely honest about how the crime affected them both.

Extension activities
Challenge the students to consider their views on offences where serious harm has been caused such as rape, murder, and child abuse. Would they still favour restorative justice? Do they think it would work?
