This activity introduces the students to a fictitious but very realistic crime scene at Avni's Stores. An offence has been committed by Ryan, who is then attacked by Manish. Students read what happened and, from the evidence, they offer their opinions to answer the questions in PC Lawler's notebook.

Discussion
Talk about the motivations that lead people to commit crimes e.g. anger, greed, love, revenge. Ask if any of the students have suffered racial abuse and what it means to them. How does racism make a person feel? What forms of racism are there? E.g. verbal abuse, physical abuse, being ignored, discrimination at work etc. What stereotypes are there of white/black/Asian people?

Role play
Ask the students to imagine that another character, Sunil, came into the shop just as Manish was threatening Ryan. He acts like a mediator, calms the situation down and prevents Manish from harming Ryan. Invite the students to work in pairs to act out the roles of Sunil and Manish. What would Sunil say to persuade Manish to stop? Manish is intent on defending his parents: what would he be saying?

Extension activities
Challenge the students to go through the evidence of the case and create a crime report of what actually happened. At the end of the report, they must decide who they think is the criminal: Ryan, Manish, or both?
