        | Discussion Explain that Manish's case is being heard in a Crown Court. Why? (At 20, he is too old to have been dealt with in a youth court). His case could have been heard in a magistrates' court but it was considered serious enough for the Crown Court. Do the students agree that this is a serious offence?
Role play Extension activitiesIn small groups of four, ask the students to take it in turns to play the role of Manish, the judge, the defence barrister and the prosecution lawyer, and act out the courtroom scene. They should think carefully about what questions the magistrates would ask and the answers Manish might give.
Invite the students to make up a case which might be heard in a Crown Court, presenting the information in the form of a police case file. Possible cases might include a man charged with armed robbery, a woman accused of trying to poison her husband, and someone deliberately setting fire to a house where a family lived.
