View activityThis is an activity which encourages the students to think about the human rights of various people living in a residential home for senior citizens. The students work in groups to determine what the problem is and take a class vote on a number of different options.
DiscussionTalk about the possible conflict between rights and responsibilities, specifically about noise. Whose rights are being violated if someone plays loud music and another person doesn't like it? Who is in the wrong and what can be done to resolve the conflict of interests?
Role playExtension activitiesIn small groups of four, ask the students to act out the roles of a mediator, Gran, David and Mr Kim, taking it in turns to be the mediator. What could they say to try to resolve the problem? How do the other characters feel about the situation and what do they say? This could be developed into a hot-seating activity, with different students taking turns to be one of the characters who sits in the 'hot seat' while the others ask them questions in an attempt to get them to justify their feelings and actions.
Challenge the students to draw up a list of 'Ten top tips' for solving the problem amicably without going to court. This might include limiting the children's visits to a specific time; asking Mr Kim to stay in a different room when they visit; and talking through their problem together, with each person being allowed three minutes to have their say without interruptions.
