This activity reintroduces Shoma, who was not being paid the minimum wage. She has taken her case to an employment tribunal, and the students read all the evidence before taking a class vote on what the tribunal's decision should be.

Discussion
What can the students tell you about the National Minimum Wage? What do they think about Shoma going to an employment tribunal? Is she brave or just fighting a losing battle? What would they do if they were in her position?

Role play
Ask the students to imagine they have a Saturday job, and that they don't think they are being paid enough. Working in pairs they can act out a scene with an employee and an employer. The employee needs to ask for a pay rise, giving relevant reasons without getting angry when it is refused. The students should take it in turns to be the employee/employer.

Extension activities
Ask the students to research what happens if a person wins an employment tribunal. Who pays the compensation and what happens if the company cannot afford to pay? Some students will be able to write an information leaflet about tribunals, or a 'Did you know?' fact sheet of their own.
