Activity: Our new school rules
PSHE & Citizenship 1a. 2a.
View activity
The activity shows a series of pictures portraying aspects of school life. Each picture has a caption to establish some main principles. The children choose their five top ideas for a school where everyone feels happy and safe and can do their best work.
Discussion
Talk about what might happen if there were no rules. How could you play a game of football or know when to cross the road? Ask the children to think about their own lives and describe a simple situation where rules help them. Is it possible to think of a rule which fits nearly every situation, for example, 'listen and think before taking action'?
Role play
Set up a spoof school council meeting to which parents and governors have been invited. On the agenda is the topic, 'Our school rules'. Ask the children to role play different characters, for example, younger children, parents, teachers and governors. Do different groups of people have different concerns? Is there agreement on five great school rules?
