Discussion Encourage the children to think through the consequences of each course of action. You might like to consider Fezana's choice as a class and then ask the children to work in a small group to consider Sam's options. Challenge the children to reach a unanimous decision in their group before they take the vote. Talk about how easy or difficult it was to reach an agreement. Did everyone have strong views? How important do the children think it is to tell the truth? Would the head teacher have acted differently if Sam hadn't lied? Does Sam have any good reasons to run away from what he has done?
Role play
Invite each group to take one of the decision options facing Sam and Fezana, and to role play the effect of the decision as far as they can. Which other people might be included in the knock on effect - other children, teachers, parents?
Extension activities
- Talk about other dilemmas with the children, for example, 'What would you do if you kept kicking your ball over the neighbour's fence and one day the neighbour got really cross and refused to give the ball back?' Who is 'in the right' in this situation?
- Can the children apply the 'What makes a fair system?' criteria to this scenario? (Motive, intention, consequences, reaction, effect on others, prevention and being seen to be fair.) Challenge them to come up with a suggested solution that includes all these points.
