Hoax Calls
Check with the children that they know what a real emergency is. You should only call 999 in a real emergency. That means that:
  • There is risk of injury - someone could be badly hurt.
  • There is serious damage to property.
  • You think there's a crime happening at the time.
  • Something really serious is happening, which needs the police to be there.
Which of these incidents would be a genuine emergency?
  • A cat stuck in a tree. (No)
  • A smouldering litterbin in the park. (No)
  • Some graffiti on a wall. (No)
  • A car accident. (Yes)
  • A mugging. (Yes)

Ask the children to role play the procedure for making a genuine emergency call.

Anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs)
  • Swearing excessively and vandalism are two reasons why someone might receive an ASBO. What other reasons can the children think of?
  • What do the children think would be a good way to persuade someone to change their anti-social behaviour?
The purpose of ASBOs
The children can write three FAQs and their answers, which give key information about ASBOs, beginning with the words: 'what', 'who' and 'why'.
